On this, CPS is correct: entering the skilled trades is a career path incredibly rewarding, incredibly overlooked.

Actually, chicago used to have trade and technology schools.

The geniuses of the 1990 young neoliberals agreeing with the 1990 old Reganright produced what became referred to positively as “school reform.”

Schooling became about testing and ranking and competition to achieve.

The young neoliberals of the 90s and the older reganrights of the 90s thought this was great.

Test scores are the primary way into a university.

And those with university degrees get jobs.

So schools were closed: they didn’t make the cut, so they were cut.

Places where kids were growing up with shut down and condemned.

Some became apartments.

And suddenly everyone was in college.

And then suddenly everyone had some sort of college degree.

And a mountain of student debt.

And a job that doesn’t seem to make it worth it.

When many of those students could be making good money in a stable career, with union protection, a pension, and a rewarding way to contribute to society.

If only they had been told about an education to a career in the skilled trades.

I am honored to be on the team for this even that needs to be shared. See the flyer below and please share this. Someone may need it.

Looking Forward,
