When people ask when my passion for activism began, the answer is always: Loyola University Chicago.
10 years ago, I posted a bunch of flyers around campus.
What followed was an amazing experiential learning process: we fought alongside the campus’ AntiRacism Movement (ARM), we promoted sustainability forming a new recycling program and bike lending program, and we began construction on an a new basketball arena and new student center for future generations of #ramblers.
Over the years I have heard accounts from other alumni and have checked in via the Loyola Phoenix on the campus’ current events, and the trend has been consistent and continual.
Loyola University Chicago is committed to teaching social justice values not only inside the classroom, but, perhaps more importantly, outside of the classroom.
Loyola University Chicago is that university that remarkably encourages its student body to organize and be activists: “lead extraordinary lives,” “Go forth and set the world on fire.”
These intensely encouraging phrases are actually heard in lectures, not just printed in latin on mosaic walls.
That is why I am proud of my alma mater right now.
It isn’t just that Loyola has an athletic arena and a student center. It is that the administration had the foresight to construct them.
It isn’t just the amazing players and Sr. Jean (#GoRamblers). It is the University itself.
We have the spotlight on us, and, just like every time, we are going forth and setting the world on fire.
