We all care about Chicago’s public school system and all of whom it serves.
I believe that right now is our chance to reform CPS into an elected, rather than an appointed, School Board.
We have this chance. Let’s be sure we not only consider the implications of the Elected School Board in today’s Chicago, but let’s consider all implications that will impact all the generations of Chicagos to come.
Our city is unique. It has a creative structure of access, transparency, and accountability directly over each public school . This structure is the Local School Council.
A School Board that includes participation of Local School Councils ensures the participation of education advocates of the most local level, not just those who win large elections backed by giant special interest groups.
The current bill calls for 21 elected districts.
If a giant soft drink company funded a slate of candidates with the nation-wide funding they have, and won only 11 seats, then that would give the soft drink company enough votes to pass a contract for exclusive use of their product in our schools. #JustSayin
I feel some of us have found an answer in response: A comprise.
